The referendum, held on 19 November by the electoral commission, saw this design win more than 50 percent of the vote, and it will thus go up against the current flag in March next year in a final battle.
According to Stuff.co.nz: “The blue represents the sky and water this country is surrounded by. The black represents the pride and strength of all New Zealanders. The multiple points of the fern leaf represent Aotearoa’s peaceful multicultural society.”
The second place design was also Lockwood’s, featuring red instead of black above the silver fern.
