New Zealand Media and Entertainment and MediaWorks, who operate radio stations like The Edge, The Rock, More FM, ZM, Hauraki and others, have confirmed Jackson’s tracks have been removed from their playlists.
The decision comes afteer the recent premiere of Leaving Neverland – an HBO documentary in which two men allege Jackson molested them as children.
“We aren’t deciding whether Michael Jackson is guilty of paedophilia, we’re just making sure our radio stations are going to play the music people want to hear,” MediaWorks group content director Leon Wratt told Magic Talk.
“The audience has always been pretty split over Michael Jackson. You’ve got 500 songs on a playlist and you have to make the decisions which 500 are the ones people will want to listen to.”
Jackson’s music has also been withdrawn from the BBC Radio 2 playlist in the United Kingdom – and Canadian radio stations CKOI, Rythme and The Beatin.
