There was a full-on search for the boy when his parents realised he was missing early on Tuesday morning, with CCTV footage on Monday night the last anyone saw of him, with his brother Eric. The army had also been called in to help the search.
Helicopters spotted the boy’s body on the beach at around 1pm on Thursday, and after informing the family, Inspector Sarah Stewart said: “It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that a boy’s body has been found on Waitarere Beach area this afternoon.
“He was spotted by helicopter around 1pm and was located shortly after by a ground team.
“The cause of death has yet to be established. I can say that the circumstances are suspicious.
“This is absolutely the worst outcome for all involved. This is devastating for the family and all those involved in the search for him.”
One News Now reported that a man had been taken in for questioning, as a homicide investigation had been started, but no details were given as to his involvement.
