This week in history: Young Kiwi girl wins coveted Oscar

This week, 23 years ago, saw 11-year-old New Zealander Anna Paquin win an Academy Award for the best supporting actress award for her role as Flora McGrath in the acclaimed historical drama The Piano.



Film director and fellow Kiwi Jane Campion chose Paquin from a pool of 5000 candidates. Despite having no acting experience, Paquin impressed Campion with a monologue about Flora’s father.

The Piano won the coveted Palme d’Or at Cannes and three Oscars at the 1994 awards.

In 2013 Campion revealed that she had originally intended Hunter’s character to die at the end of the film, but changed her mind during shooting.
