THE Silver Ferns have finished 2012 in perfect fashion, beating Australia 48-43 in Hamilton.
It didn’t prevent the Diamonds taking the series on goal percentage, but the win will give New Zealand confidence heading into 2013.
The Ferns were thrashed by 20 in their previous meeting in Sydney, but on the back of good defensive efforts by captain Casey Williams, and 100-test veteran Leana de Bruin, they were too strong for the old enemy.
Irene van Dyk (28/33) and Maria Tutaia (20/24) were largely effective under the hoop, despite some early struggles.
Both side battled to give their shooters good ball early on, but two intercepts from de Bruin helped the Ferns settle.
The Diamonds led by as much as six before the halftime break, before some Williams’ inspiration helped turn the tide to the hosts.
