Williams, who hurt his knee in the lead-up to Otere Black’s try for the Blues in their Super Rugby win over the Stormers in Auckland two weeks ago, is to have minor arthroscopy surgery on the knee on Friday.
The word out of the Blues camp was that he could be expected back in six weeks.
Williams, who was named in the 41-man squad for the All Blacks’ foundation day in Wellington on Monday, will not attend that meeting. No replacement has been named for him.
Blues coach Leon MacDonald said he felt sorry for Williams as he had fallen awkwardly and caused some damage in the process.
“We’ll miss him on the field obviously but he’s still contributing in the meeting rooms where he can,” he said.
MacDonald said Williams was a determined player and he really wanted to the make the World Cup squad this year and would be working hard to keep that as his goal.
“He’s pretty driven to make sure he recovers well from this injury and gets back on the field,” he said.
