Daniel Nicholas Tuapawa allegedly hurled Islamophobic abuse at worshippers last week.
He was wearing a Donald Trump-branded T-shirt at the time.
The 33-year-old Tuapawa has since appeared in court and admitted to disorderly behaviour. The charge carries a potential three-month prison term – and NZ$2,000 fine.
“The community is understandably shaken by this behavior,” said Canterbury District Commander Superintendent John Price.
According to Radio New Zealand, Tuapawa stated that all Muslims are terrorists and must leave the country.
“Our community has no tolerance for those who target or victimize others because of their identity, and nor does the police,” added Price.
“This is especially so for members of our Muslim community who are already dealing with so much.”
