FORMER MP Lockwood Smith is New Zealand’s new high commissioner to the United Kingdom.
He arrived in London to take up his position at New Zealand House in London late last month, a role which also sees him take up designate positions to Ireland and Nigeria.
The former National MP resigned from his position as Speaker to take up the role, having impressed many with his work in Parliament.
He told NZ Newswire that he wanted to tackle the UK on its high departure tax, as well as ease Visa restrictions for those who wanted to work.
Defence, security, science, education and tourism ties would also remain a top priority.
Dr Smith replaces Derek Leask, who had been in the role since 2008.
