It’s almost five metres in length and is formally known as a Architeuthis dux squid.
It washed up on Wellington’ south coast recently.
“After we went for a dive we went back to the squid and got a tape measure out, and it measured 13 feet long,” diver Daniel Aplin told the New Zealand Herald.
Aplin phoned a friend from New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research. That person then arranged for the squid to be collected.
