Hobbit actor arrested in Texas

New Zealand actor Manu Bennett, one of the stars of the Hobbit trilogy, was arrested for assault while attending a recent Comic Convention in Texas.

Bennett, who portrayed the character Azog in the Hobbit films and is also known for his roles in TV series such as Spartacus, Arrow and the Shannara Chronicles, was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge after allegedly punching a 29-year-old man in the face at a hotel party.

Bexar County Central Magistrate office records reveal the 45-year-old actor was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning and released just after noon on the same day after a bond of $1,600 was posted.

The incident is believed to have occurred at the Grand Hyatt hotel in San Antonio.

Further details were not known, though a spokesman from the San Antonio Police Department confirmed they had been called to an ‘assault in progress’ at the hotel.

Prior to his high profile international roles, Bennett rose to fame in New Zealand as one of the stars of the long-running drama Shortland Street, as well as Australian series Water Rats.

Bennett was born in New Zealand but moved to Australia as a child.
