The investigation into the murder of Lee Rata on New Year’s Eve has taken another turn as police have arrested four more people in connection to the killing in Kaitaia.

Rata, who was 35 when he passed away, was beaten to death on Bonnet Road on the last day of 2015, and while a passer-by found him and called the emergency services, he died the next day.

A man has already been arrested in connection to the murder, and now three more men and a women have been taken into custody, after police conducted raids on various gang locations.

Detective Inspector Kevin Burke said in the NZ Herald: “We have been receiving great assistance from the public, who have supplied information that has been crucial in achieving today’s results.

“The investigation team has been working tirelessly to see these people are held to account.

“I believe that many reluctant witnesses who were in fear of reprisals from gang members will now have the confidence to come forward.”

The four will appear in Kaikohe District Court on Friday to be charged with murder, party to murder and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
