The list of top girls’ and boys’ names for 2014 was released by the Department of Internal Affairs on 5 January.
Oliver is still the most popular boy’s name while Charlotte steals the top position for the girls.
In comparison to the statistics of 2013, the girl’s name Harper has gained popularity, moving from position 19 to eight while Ruby has dropped from number three to number 10.
According to Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages Jeff Montgomer, the top 100 girls’ and boys’ names only make up a small part of the first names registered for children. 12 000 unique first names were registered in 2014.
The only restrictions for parents naming their children include the name not causing offence to a reasonable person, not being unreasonably long, and not resembling an official title or rank.
