NEW Zealand will take three five-eighths to the Rugby Championship matches in Argentina and South Africa.
Coach Steve Hansen unveiled a 28-man squad for Tests against the Pumas in La Plata on September 29 and South Africa in Johannesburg on October 6.
A calf injury forced Dan Carter to miss the All Blacks last two home Tests, against the same two opponents.
Hansen anticipated the 89-Test veteran would be ready but had selected two others as insurance.
“Dan is recovering well from his calf injury and we are expecting him to be fit for selection for the Argentinian Test,” Hansen said.
“However, to be on the safe side we are also taking Beauden Barrett as cover at five-eighth, alongside Aaron Cruden.”
The inclusion of Barrett forced Hansen to omit a player in another position.
That was prop Wyatt Crockett, with Hansen content there was enough depth in the front row.
There were no other surprises in the squad who can secure the inaugural Rugby Championship with one round to play if they beat Argentina.
