NEW ZEALAND has opened it World Softball Championships campaign with a 5-0 win over Mexico on the North Shore.
The Black Sox were 4-0 up after just two innings against the Central Americans in the opening match of the 16-team tournament.
New Zealand were expected to win but there had been talk about the strength of their pitching roster.
However Heinie Shannon and Nik Hayes made sure the Mexicans were unable to progress past season base with a solid effort from the mound.
New Zealand are looking for their sixth world title.
Australia are the current champions.
Donny Hale hit two RBIs for the Kiwis, while veteran Jarrad Martin hit a solo home run as they shrugged off poor pre-tournament form.
