United States president Donald Trump has cut short Johnson’s sentence, a first-time drug offender, following his meeting with the reality star.
Johnson has already served 21 years of her life sentence.
In a statement, the White House said: “Ms Johnson has accepted responsibility for her past behaviour and has been a model prisoner over the past two decades. Despite receiving a life sentence, Alice worked hard to rehabilitate herself in prison, and act as a mentor to her fellow inmates.
“While this administration will always be very tough on crime, it believes that those who have paid their debt to society and worked hard to better themselves while in prison deserve a second chance.”
Kim called the commutation the “best news ever” and tweeted that she is “grateful to Donald Trump, Jared Kushner and everyone who contributed countless hours to this important moment for Ms Alice Marie Johnson.”
This is the American president’s sixth act of clemency since he has been in office.
