A LARGE avalanche has smashed through an area near The Remarkables ski field, east of Queenstown, in New Zealand.
A police rescue team and local ski field staff are heading to the area to search for anyone who may have been injured in the avalanche, which hit on Thursday afternoon.
There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
Craig Douglas, spokesman for NZSki which runs The Remarkables, told AAP the avalanche hit some distance from the ski field so it’s unlikely anyone has been hurt.
He says sending staff to search the area is normal process following an avalanche.
The avalanche was about 80 metres by 120m, he said.
