The annual readership survey named Auckland as the only New Zealand city to feature in the top 10 list. It ties for first place with Melbourne.
In announcing the results for the friendliest cities in the world, the magazine quotes readers’ descriptions of Auckland as a “clean, youthful, adventurous, beautiful” city.
“The people are friendly, and their humour and view on life is something to aspire to attain,” one reader says.
Others raved about the gorgeous seaside city and its clean air, fresh food and amazing culture.
The title is a considerable step up from last year’s 16th placing on the world’s friendliest cities list.
It follows Auckland being named one of the top 10 cities in the world to visit in Lonely Planet’s 2014 Best in Travel Guide.
Auckland Mayor Len Brown says it underpins his goal to make the city the world’s most liveable.
