Taking place at the Auckland International Airport, three individuals were nabbed by local police after they were found with MDMA (ecstasy) worth up to $5 million.
The three foreign nationals arrived from Singapore and hid 12kg of drugs in false-bottom suitcases.
It is speculated that more drugs from the same crime syndicate sent over more drug mules during the busy festive season in December.
“Customs carries out profiling using data and technology to identify high-risk passengers,” Customs said in a statement regarding the incident.
The three mean are facing up to 14 years in prison if found guilty and are said to appear in front of the Manukau District Court on January 27.
