White confident of Football Ferns’ success in Rio

The New Zealand Football Ferns are in a tough group for the Olympics in Rio, having to face World Cup champions and Olympic veterans the USA, but striker Rosie White is confident of reaching the knock outs.

In London in 2012, the Ferns did get out of the group stage before being knocked out in the last 16, by the USA who went on to win a third gold in a row. This time, White hopes they’ll be able to cause an upset.

White, who plays for Liverpool Ladies, said on the BBC: “We’ve always gone as underdogs into these tournaments, but that plays well for us.

“Hopefully we can cause a few upsets and make our way though the group stage and then see how we go.

“I’m absolutely buzzing about it and can’t wait. It’s been such a long build up for the Ferns and everyone’s really excited”.

Aside from Carli Lloyd and company, the Ferns, who feature Abby Erceg and Katie Bowen who play in the US professionally, have to face France and Colombia, the former of which is in the top five in the rankings.

At the World Cup in Canada last year, the Ferns did not make it out of the group stage.
