WHEN the nights begin to draw in and we are surrounded by grey skies, drizzle and freezing temperatures it is no surprise that more and more of us are looking for that perfect winter getaway. What could be better than jetting off to an altogether sunnier destination?

Both Europe and North Africa boast cities and resorts where the temperature hits 20ºC throughout the winter months, so sunny skies are closer than you think.

The best way to decide which destination to pick is to consider your budget and any time restraints, which could put that winter trip to Disneyworld Florida just out of reach. Europe’s cities may not be on the same temperature scale as the south coast of the USA but places like Rome have clear blue skies throughout the cold season and they are only a couple of hours away. If you are looking for pure heat to go with your sunny skies then there are many easyJet Holidays city breaks that will take you there.

So, you have decided to leave home behind and head to a place where a touch of sunbathing won’t leave you with frostbite, and where better than Tenerife? The semi-tropical climate makes it a perfect winter holiday island. Popular with young groups during the summer months, Tenerife becomes quieter during winter, when visitors will find there is much more to the island than 18-30 partying.

Home to El Teide, one of the world’s largest volcanoes, as well as some of Spain’s most beautiful landscapes, Tenerife is perfect for the outdoors type, and hiking is popular here. Northern Tenerife is slightly cooler than the south but it is still hot enough during winter to make the most of the beautiful sandy beaches, like Playa de las Teresitas. Resorts like Las Americas on the island’s south coast are great for those who want their sunshine accompanied by lively bars, restaurants and designer shops.

If you are looking for something a little more adventurous than Tenerife then it is worth considering one the many cheap Algarve holidays that are available throughout winter. Jet into Faro airport and enjoy the relaxed pace of life in one of Portugal’s most picturesque regions, with 200km of coastline to explore.

There are great hotels, rustic villages, the stunning Ria Formosa natural park, and a huge number of championship standard golf courses where you can work on your handicap. Year round sun and warm sea mean that the beaches of the Algarve make for one of the best places to spend this winter.

Alternatively, you might be looking for somewhere further afield, in which case Marrakesh could be the answer. It is known as Morocco’s ‘jewel of the south’ and it is not hard to see why. Combining incredible architecture, rich culture and a vibrant atmosphere it is a city that inspires. There are many attractions for visitors, including buzzing street markets, camel trips to the desert and all sorts of historical tours. Its incredible restaurants, cafes and bars will mean that it won’t just be the weather you’ll miss when you say goodbye (and make sure not to leave before sampling a Moroccan mint tea).

If you’re on a budget then city breaks in Rome can be found at reasonable prices. Refresh yourself with a visit to one ofEurope’s most beautiful, not to mention romantic, cities and take in the history, style and architecture on your very own Roman holiday. Visits to the Pantheon, the Colosseum and the Sistine Chapel are a must; you can then refuel whilst sightseeing by making the most of Rome’s many great restaurants, cafés and bars.  Don’t forget to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain for luck.
