When you think ‘backpacking’, generic images of hiking and camping can come to mind, but this isn’t really the most accurate depiction of the modern-day traveller.
The average Australian backpacker these days is a city hopper.
Most backpacking adventures for an Australian in the UK mean travelling to urban locations and taking in as many city getaways.
Tackling the urban jungle can be just as much of a challenge as any Amazon escape. Predators lurk, and the path can be rough but if you’re smart, you can prove yourself to be an adventurous and successful explorer.
When I was leaving Australia for my big trip overseas, my advice was to embrace the entire experience as when things so wrong, they make for the some interesting memories.
And it is true, the stories are priceless. And when you get lost, sometimes you discover the best things.
But there are many things learnt on the road and the Australian Times team have put our heads together and have come up our top backpacking trips to help you make the most of your adventures.
