For over a decade teaching has been one of the most reliable means of sustaining New Zealand expats in the UK.  Gone are the days of pulling pints in dingy London pubs and still making enough to fund wild European summers.  Teaching offers well paid, flexible work while providing invaluable experience and professional development to, one day, take back to NZ classrooms.

The only question is: where do I start?  As an Antipodean in London who specialises in education recruitment – this is often the first question I’m asked by newly arriving teachers.  I have personally helped many teachers from New Zealand, from the moment they arrive to the day they sit in front of their first class.

Qualified teachers from New Zealand can teach in maintained UK schools for up to four years as an Overseas Trained Teacher (OTT).  Once I’ve found you work, I will also support you through the acquiring of a National Insurance (NI) number and a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

If you’re not a qualified teacher but are interested in learning support roles, you could work as a teaching assistant. There are no formal qualifications required, but you will need the right qualities to provide a valuable service to UK schools. The growing educational support sector requires enthusiastic and passionate people who are eager to make a real difference in the lives of pupils. Roles in this field include one-to-one special needs support, whole class support, and curriculum based small group intervention. The role attracts people from sectors as diverse as health care, youth work, sports coaching, music, performing arts as well as students and professionals from many walks of life.

Register with Teaching Personnel and you will have a dedicated consultant who can speed your transition into UK classrooms. Enjoy European summers and explore the UK safe in the knowledge that Teaching Personnel’s 60 nationwide offices can source the work you require, complete with some of the industry’s best pay rates.
