Spot-fixing allegations serious: NZ PM

Prime Minister John Key says he doesn’t know whether match-fixing allegations swirling around New Zealand cricketers are true and the sport’s authorities should quickly get to the bottom of it.

New-Zealand_Cricket_Logo“I don’t have enough information to work on and make an assessment but, if the allegations are half-way correct, it’s an extremely serious situation,” he said on Tuesday.

Testimony about spot-fixing from former Black Cap Lou Vincent and current captain Brendon McCullum have been leaked to the media, and they refer to “player X” whom they say was involved.

Former New Zealand cricketer Chris Cairns has denied he’s player X.

Key says he doesn’t know anything about the leaks.

“This thing is steeped in mystery, I don’t know who is leaking to whom, the rumours have been running around for a long time and it’s very important to get to the bottom of what’s taking place.”
