WHO report reveals Kiwis as heavy drinkers – kinda

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has released a report showing that New Zealanders consume higher levels of alcohol than countries in South-East Asia, but lower than those in Europe – or should we say Russia?

Beer NecessitiesThe WHO report looks at alcohol consumed globally in 2010 by drinkers aged 15 and older. Kiwis consumed 13.7 litres of pure alcohol per capita in the year 2010. This is more than double the global average of  6,55 litres.

As predicted, we favour beer over most drinks, with wine as a close second:

Mashable’s  map of the WHO report highlighted the “drunkest countries in the world”, including many in Eastern Europe. New Zealand wasn’t too far behind, as this WHO map shows:

The map shows how New Zealand compares to countries outside the Western Pacific region. So while Kiwis might consume less than Aussies (14.5 litres of pure alcohol per drinker) and Saffas (27.1), we’re still consuming much more than most of South East Asia. With men consuming more than double that of women in New Zealand, we’ve definitely got the boys to thank for this one.
