Orion joins search for Malaysian plane

A Royal New Zealand Air Force Orion is to join the search for the missing Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777.

New Zealand has become the eighth country to join the search for the missing aircraft, which was carrying 239 passengers, including New Zealanders Paul Weeks and Ximin Wang, and 12 crew.

The Orion stopped in Darwin on Tuesday morning and was expected at Malaysia’s Butterworth Airbase later in the day, an RNZAF spokesman told AAP.

The aircraft would take search directions from local authorities who are co-ordinating the wider search, he said.

The RNZAF has six long-range P-3K2 Orions, which are used for maritime surveillance and are frequently called in to help in maritime searches.
