THE New Zealand Air Force has helped rescue a sailor who was washed overboard a ship northwest of Singapore in the Malacca Strait.

The 10 crew members of the P3K Orion Aircraft responded to a mayday call by a merchant vessel 100km northwest of Singapore on Monday afternoon.

The pilots were training in Malaysia with members of the Australian, Malaysian, Singaporean and United Kingdom air forces when they responded to the call.

A spokesman told AAP the New Zealand pilots directed the ship’s crew to the missing crewman when they spotted his beacon flashing in the water.

The Kiwi team responded to the call because the P3K Orion Aircraft is able to fly longer – up to 18 hours – than most other aircraft.
