NZ journalist’s murderer, Michael Umanui Werahiko, accused in court

Michael Umanui Werahiko accused of murdering New Zealand journalist Derek Round has made another court appearance, and will stay behind bars until another appearance next month.

THE man accused of murdering New Zealand journalist Derek Round has made another court appearance, and will stay behind bars until another appearance next month.

Michael Umanui Werahiko, 31, appeared in Whanganui District Court on Wednesday, where he was remanded to appear again on July 26, Newstalk ZB reported.

Police are still investigating the death and no plea has been entered.

Mr Round, 77, a former New Zealand Press Association editor and foreign correspondent, was found dead in his Whanganui home last month. He had suffered several blows to his head.

Werahiko was arrested a few days later.
