Matariki Ki Tua includes works by George Nuku and Rosanna Raymond (Sista Spacific) who currently have artworks on display in the ‘Skin’ exhibition at the Wellcome Collections (see link below for more information). The night will also conclude with a performance by Ngati Ranana.
Matariki is the Maori name given for a small cluster of stars that appear in early June, also known as Pleiades and the Seven sisters. This is recognized in New Zealand as the Maori New Year and the initial appearance of the star cluster marks the beginning of Matariki Celebrations. It is a time for acknowledging the past, giving respect to the whenua (land), and celebrating the potential of the coming New Year.
Ngati Ranana has been invited to compete in an International Maori song and dance competition that will be held in Hawaii in August – Te Manahua. All proceeds from Matariki 2010 go towards Ngati Ranana, fundraising efforts for entrance into this competition.
Matariki 2010 will be held on Saturday 26th June 2010. Doors open to the public at 6.30pm, in the Penthouse at New Zealand House, Haymarket, London SW1Y 4TQ
