Hollywood star Chris Pine facing NZ charge

A Hollywood star best known for helming a starship on-screen is facing a drink-driving charge in New Zealand.

Chris Pine, who played Captain James Kirk in two Star Trek reboot blockbusters, was stopped during what police say was a routine drink-driving operation near the mid-Canterbury town of Methven on March 1.

Pine is in Canterbury shooting Z For Zachariah, a Hollywood science fiction film set after a nuclear war.

Canterbury police say a 33-year-old American national has been charged with drinking with excess blood alcohol and will appear in Ashburton District Court on March 17.

No further information will be released by police because the matter is before the courts.

Among his co-stars in Z For Zachariah are British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, nominated for an Oscar for best actor for 12 Years A Slave, and Australian actress Margot Robbie.
