DESPITE all of our well-meaning promises over the festive period, we’ve all given in to a little over indulgence. Wherever you spent Christmas, whether you were banqueting on BBQ or tackling an oversized turkey, gaining a little extra weight and trying to emulate the rotund figure of a rosy cheeked Santa Claus is all part of the fun. It’s no wonder then that as the New Year rolls around, many of us have resolved to work our Gluteus Maximus back into a recognisable shape. However, whilst our bodies may have gained a few extra pounds, more often than not our wallets have lost them. Luckily, for anyone living in London, there are plenty of free ways to get fit and healthy in the New Year without spending lots of cash. Take a look at our top picks for a free workout in 2014.

  • What the Deuce! It was indeed a shocking day when Andy Murray became the first British Wimbledon champion since 1936. So to celebrate such an auspicious occasion, the Tennis For Free foundation is offering free courses and courts for the next two years. Get down to your local court or club and serve your way into slimness.
  • Pedal Power Whilst London hasn’t always been the safest place to cycle through, things are beginning to change. Cycling to work is certainly becoming more popular and, as public transport costs continue to rise, looks set to continue that way. Take advantage of both free transport and free exercise and invest in a new bike.
  • Park Life With around 100 square kilometres of glorious parkland, London’s urban sprawl doesn’t have to be quite so grey and gloomy. Including a host of facilities from basketball courts to bathing pools and everything in between, these parks are a great way to work up a sweat – or just take a nice stroll.
  • Mabley Green Beach We’ve all seen the muscle-bound-meat-heads strutting their stuff the length and breadth of Miami Beach. Well thankfully, this is nothing like that. What the two do have in common is a completely free outdoor gym. In fact, they are dotted throughout the UK and offer a range of equipment for any level or age.

Of course, whilst still in the depths of winter it pays to have some decent sportswear to keep you warm and dry. Head over to Zalando and browse their comprehensive collection of high quality athletic garments found here and kick off your new year in sporting style.
