End Of Life Choice Bill passes first reading

A bill legalising euthanasia has passed its first reading in New Zealand Parliament.

Seventy six were in favour and 44 against the vote on sending the bill to the Justice select committee.

“I thought that we would have the numbers, I didn’t think we would have as many as we did have,” said ACT MP David Seymour, who had proposed the End Of Life Choice Bill.

“And now it’s up to the public to make their views heard. If they want choice then the justice select committee will soon be seeking the public’s views.”

Seymour insists he will support a referendum to give the public the final say on the legislation, but wants the support of New Zealand First MPs in return.
