Dominion Post under fire as Fairfax Media wield axe

Fairfax Media will close or sell more than 30 percent of its print titles in New Zealand soon, amid an attempt to improve their digital strategy via their Stuff rebrand.

Group chief executive Greg Hywood confirmed that the Sydney-based company will effectively get rid of about a third of its set of New Zealand print publications. These include Wellington’s Dominion Post, Christchurch’s Press, Hamilton’s Waikato Times and the Sunday Star Times.

Nearly 30 regional giveaway newspapers and agricultural publications are in line for closure, but key metropolitan and regional city newspapers will likely remain open.

Fairfax’s New Zealand media revenue dropped by almost five percent in the six months prior to 31 December 2017. Turnover, meanwhile, slipped by 24 percent. Print advertising sales slid by 15 percent – and digital revenue increased by a resounding 33 percent.

“We have enormous confidence that Stuff is heading towards sustained growth as its digital business continues its strong momentum,” said Hywood.

“We will take advantage of opportunities arising from media consolidation as and when it occurs. Any decisions we take will be in the best interests of our shareholders.

“We have progressed our recent positive discussions with News Corp Australia to seek industry-wide efficiencies in printing and distribution.

“We have had successful collaborations around shared trucking and printing titles for News in Queensland. Building on this collaboration we have jointly appointed advisers to pursue deeper strategic opportunities.

“Metro’s next-generation publishing model is delivering a step-change for consumers with the launch of new websites and apps to grow engagement and drive subscriptions and revenue.”
