THE Black Sticks went down in their Olympic hockey semifinal again the Netherlands in a shoot-out today.

There was a 2-2 stalemate at fulltime and there were no more goals in extra time so a shoot-out was needed.

The Dutch prevailed, scoring three penalties compared to New Zealand’s one.

The Black Sticks now play for the bronze medal against either Great Britain or Argentina on Friday.

Almost all the scoring action in regular time came through penalty corners.

Black Sticks’ captain Kayla Sharland opened the scoring in the 8th minute but the Netherlands equalised four minutes before halftime from their penalty corner weapon Maartje Paumen.

The Blacks Sticks scored early in th second spell when a break by Stacey Michelsen opened up the Dutch defence and Krystal Forgesson was left in the open to hammer home her shot.

Paumen was again her side’s hero, netting from another penalty corner.

The  golden goal extra-time period was tension filled but lacked any clear cut chances to either side.

The Dutch took their opportunities in the shoot-out however, looking far more confident in the pressure situation.
